About The Silver Coyote

Who is this guy? What's he doing?

There used to be a "Furry Code" banner here, but it seems that Vulpine Dreams is no longer with us, so none of it worked any more. I guess you'll have to rely on my own opinion of myself. So, let's see...

I'm male, and was born just a few weeks before the decade of the 1950s ended. I'm happily married to the prettiest Fox there is, and we have three pups, one in ministry following his graduation from Biola University, one starting his college career, and one in high school. I have been a resident of southern California ("soCal" to those who live here) since birth, but have traveled extensively in the Americas and have been to Europe as well.

I started flying at the ripe old age of eight, when my father first obtained his Private Pilot license, and have been fascinated with aviation ever since. I love the outdoors, especially that part that is found in the American southwest, and get out of the urban jungle at every opportunity. To that end my Fox and I enjoy four-wheeling the back country using our small travel trailer as a base of operations. Amongst other things I have done with my life, I count my time with the AT&SF Railway (now the BNSF) as the most enjoyable job I've ever had. I guess that's a hint that I'm quite the railfan as well.

I am six foot, blue eyed, heavier than I want to be, and my hair is getting more and more silver every day.

And I'm sort of well known for wearing a hat.

I don't know if I qualify as being a dyed-in-the-wool furry. (I know, bad use of a cliché, sorry ...) I've never been to a con and don't seem to have a burning desire to attend one. I have little interest in fur-suiting and absolutely no interest in being in a fur-suit. I don't engage in role-playing games. I don't think of myself as an animal trapped in a human form, and while I do envy my adoptive species (the coyote) their cunning and virtual indestructibility, and while I do tend to refer to the appendages at the ends of my forearms as "paws," I don't think I'll be sprouting a tail and running around on all fours any time soon. I very much enjoy a lot of the literature and artwork the furry community produces, but have zero interest in yiffy stuff. The furry / anthro genre is mostly about community for me, I've made some very good friends here.

I like to write. I wish I could draw, but what little creative talent I have in imaging is mostly in celluloid and digital photography. I can sketch machines and draw plans and assembly diagrams (I was a technical writer at one point in my multi-faceted career), but when it comes to furry art my stuff tends to look more like locomotives than anthro characters. <shrugs> So I don't illustrate my stories very much. Someday maybe I'll meet someone that might do that for me. That would be cool.

I write for fun. I have no ambition towards making a living at it, and engage in it mostly to entertain myself. As the hobby grew I met some furs who also seemed to like my stuff, and those individuals encouraged me not only to write in the anthro genre but to hone my writing skills in general. As the casual reader of my stuff will observe, the earlier stuff is rather pedestrian and basic, I like to think my stories become more entertaining as they and I mature. This website, "The Range," came into existence in the fall of 2003 as an outlet for my stuff, so others could check it out. I have a pseudo-blog for those who care to keep up on what's happening in my life, and I have my forum at Planet Furry at which folks can comment on my efforts or blog ramblings.

When I'm not writing or staying in touch with my furry friends, I work. I have to, nobody around me is silly enough or rich enough to pay me to stay home and write! So I have to go out and earn a living with my paws and coyote brain, a difficult task at times. But my work does keep me outdoors, which I enjoy. Cubicles and office buildings and stale, re-circulated air give me claustrophobia.

I'm a journeyman electronics / communications technician by profession. I have been working for the same outfit since 1995 and am currently working as a control systems technician for a major water utility here in Orange County. I spend a lot of my time with process instrumentation and SCADA systems, but also work in RF and telephony. My job keeps me busy, which is good, because idle paws get into mischief!

And yeah, I am a hockey fan. There are two NHL teams within an hour's drive of my home, so even though I live in the warmest corner of the country ... game on!

I'm not sure what else I can say about myself that's interesting. If you want to know something, ask!
